11/4/09 4:25 pm Another Vote for Charter SchoolsA new study says that even students who don't attend a charter school benefit academically when their public school is exposed to charter competition. This is on top of a Stanford study showing substantial grade improvements in "poor urban children" whose primary education is at charter schools.
Shouldn't everybody just go to a charter school? What do you think?

10/27/09 12:25 pm Find out How to Get Through the Holidays as a CoupleAlapaki Yee, co-founder of the Gay Couples Institute is offering a FREE workshop called “Getting Through the Holidays” on Tuesday, December 1 from 6-8pm at the SF LGBT Community Center in San Francisco. “The GCI Couples Counseling Clinic sees a 250% increase over the holidays in gay couples distressed over issues with in-laws and parenting, much like you’d experience with heterosexual couples during the holiday season. We’re trying to be proactive and offer tools that couples can begin using immediately, if needed,” says Yee.
This workshop, created by Our Families Coalition (www.ourfamily.org), will offer discussion, strategies, and tips for navigating the holidays as a couple, and will deal with questions and issues like:
• "Whose house do we go to this year?"
• “I don't get along with my in-laws!"
• "Your parents aren't accepting of our family."
• "Do we honor our chosen family, or birth-family?"
During this workshop, Alapaki Yee will discuss unique stresses for gay couples, and how to create and keep a satisfying relationship – particularly during the holidays. -Posted by GCI
10/21/09 12:28 pm Americans are safer drivers now. That should make the roads more dangerous. Yet, the rate of vehicle fatalities is at the lowest since records started being kept over 30 years ago.

10/17/09 3:02 pm Who's covering this story?"I am sure it would give much pleasure to many of the public if the local, daily and weekly press ... would record, not only the arrivals and departures of ... the great people of this land, but also the arrivals and departures of birds."
That quote, from a 19th Century English author, sounds fanciful in a way, but this is the time of year for such migrations.
Why not record seasonal animal and bird departures and arrivals? People in less temperate climates note when migratory birds leave their area, and when they return. It's part of Earth's rhythm. And with habitats changing, this information is useful in ways beyond simply marking seasonal changes... although that's probably enough in itself. -Posted by Radiohand
